HOW TO NOT FEEL OLD

Updated: Mar 31

I remember the first time someone told me about being "old."

I was 24 at the time, and working on a dock at Old Dominion Freight Line. I was learning kickboxing at the time, and was kicking around during break (Showing off obviously)

A fellow worker, who was 33 at the time, sporting a bit of a beer belly and not someone who seemed concerned at all with fitness said...

(And I'll never forget)

"Boy, you wait till your 30. You won't be kicking around like that anymore."

I thought, huh. Maybe I wont.

When I was in my 30's, actively competing in toughman contests and martial arts events, my friends who were in their 40's said....

"Yea you wait till your 40. You won't be doing all that."

I thought...Well. I guess.

In my 40's, i kept up the pace, trained smart and just kept on doing what I love.

I had students now who were in their 50's and I'll never forget a student named Doug who said....

"I'm 50 years old. I can't be doing this anymore. You wait till YOU'RE 50."

Well I'm 57 now. Still kicking.

The question is why? How?

I'm always looking for the answer to how people older than me are still active, energetic and even competitive.

I have concluded without a doubt there is one thing each and everyone of them have in common.

They havent lost their muscle mass....

Lets talk about that now, and learn why do many people age faster, lose muscle, gain bodyfat and lose their ability to do what they love to do.

The silent epidemic

As we age, our bodies undergo various changes, many of which are quite noticeable.

One of the less discussed but profoundly impactful changes is the loss of muscle mass, a condition known as sarcopenia. This silent epidemic affects millions, yet its implications are often overlooked. In this article, we delve into the world of sarcopenia, exploring its effects on metabolism, body fat, and overall health.

The Problem Unveiled:

Imagine your body as a finely tuned machine, with muscle mass serving as its engine. Now, picture this engine gradually diminishing in size and power. This is essentially what happens as sarcopenia sets in. With age, muscle mass naturally declines, leading to a host of issues. Not only does this loss of muscle affect your physical appearance, but it also has profound effects on your metabolism.

The Metabolic Impact:

Muscle is metabolically active tissue, meaning it burns calories even at rest. As you lose muscle mass, your metabolism slows down, making it harder to maintain a healthy weight. This is particularly challenging for those looking to shed excess body fat. With a sluggish metabolism, even the most diligent efforts can seem futile.

The Vicious Cycle:

What's more, the loss of muscle mass can create a vicious cycle. As your metabolism slows, you may find it harder to engage in physical activity, further exacerbating muscle loss. This can lead to a downward spiral of decreased mobility, increased fat deposition, and a higher risk of chronic diseases.

A Solution in Sight:

Fortunately, sarcopenia is not inevitable. Through a combination of resistance training, adequate protein intake, and overall healthy lifestyle choices, you can mitigate its effects. Resistance training, in particular, has been shown to be highly effective in preserving muscle mass and boosting metabolism. By incorporating these strategies into your routine, you can combat sarcopenia and maintain a strong, healthy body well into your later years.

Sarcopenia may be a silent epidemic, but it is not a fate we must accept. By understanding its effects and taking proactive steps to preserve muscle mass, we can defy the odds and age gracefully. Embrace the power of resistance training, nourish your body with adequate protein, and prioritize your health. Together, we can combat sarcopenia and live our best lives at any age.

I plan to keep it up, and keep kicking.

I hope you'll join me.
